2009 was an exceedingly eventful year in Purple Row. The community followed the Rockies as they struggled to a 20 - 32 start before firing Clint Hurdle, hiring Jim Tracy and finishing on an improbable 72 - 36 in their next 108 games (and losing the last two keeping them from winning a division title) en route to a wild card birth, their second in three seasons.

Purple Row saw a then-record 1,238 articles posted during the 2009 season, nearly double the 2008 output (and about 200 more than the previous high set in 2007), but not everything was Dingers n Doubles for the Row. As traffic and membership increased, so did the diversity of opinion. This led to the first (and so far, seemingly only) major schism in the Row's history, the Catcher Wars. These caught the attention of noted columnist Troy Renck, and were so out-of-character with most of the back-and-forth found on Purple Row that the archives have mostly been purged of these threads.
